Dealing With Sugar Withdrawal

Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! With a new year comes New Year Resolutions and I usually have the same one every year. Can you guess what it is? If you guessed lose weight, you’re right ( typical, I know). I am officially on a detox program that I started January 1st (which I plan on reviewing for you guys) and just started experiencing my usual sugar withdrawal symptoms. So what better time to talk about this discouraging experience than now?

For those who are currently thinking of detoxing, dieting, or are in the process right now, I’m here to let you know that you’re not alone. I can give you my take and how I experience sugar detoxing and why should do it if you haven’t already (don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a long essay of a post). If you’re ready, then let’s go!


If you’re unlucky like me then you sadly experience withdrawal symptoms when going cold turkey with sugar. If you can believe it, some people don’t experience any withdrawal symptoms (hi mom!). So what symptoms can you expect to experience?

Withdrawal Symptoms

  • Headaches

  • Cravings

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle aches and pains

  • Irritability

  • Depression

I typically experience one symptom that makes me want to immediately find the nearest bakery. The dreaded withdrawal headache. It feels deadly ( I’m currently writing this as I have one right now) and makes you want to do nothing but lay down and chug some pain meds. The headaches for me usually start to kick in around day 2 without sugar. They hit you like a train and last for a few days. Luckily, by the start of the second week, the headaches are usually gone. The other symptom I typically experience is cravings. Now the cravings the first day without sugar is extreme. Extreme enough that I have to have a little sugar to hold me over. But don’t use that as an excuse to full out binge. Technically, you shouldn’t have any sugar but if you must to have some relief, a little goes a long way.

Withdrawal Relief


You might be wondering if there’s anything you can do to prevent or treat withdrawal symptoms. Personally, I don’t do anything special to treat my symptoms. I ride it out without medicine for the most part ( I usually only take medicine for my headaches when they get really bad to where I can’t sleep at night). But for those who don’t want to wait it out, here’s some things you can do:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Eat foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats to help keep your blood sugar stable and prevent further headaches and “crash”

  • Get plenty of sleep

  • Going “cold turkey” can make withdrawal harsh, so you can try slowly reducing your sugar intake instead

I’d like to personally recommend going cold turkey. The process will suck but it ends much faster than if you were to slowly wean yourself off. I will admit that I’m pretty miserable for about the first week but after that I experience absolutely no cravings whatsoever. Trust me, it’s worth the pain (literally).
