How Often Should You Wash Your Face?

You may have heard the recommendation of washing your face twice a day, every day. But the thing is that’s not a one size fits all solution. For example, not everyone has the same skin type, so most people have their own special routine ( myself included). So I figured we’d get to bottom of this and talk about how often you should really wash your face.

Twice a day is a recommendation you’ll see and hear the most. It’s gotten to the point where if you don’t wash your face twice a day people think you’re dirty and have horrible hygiene (which isn’t true). There’s a ton of variables as to why someone wouldn’t wash their face that often such as skin type, type of products used, the current state of their skin, and time of day. For example, I wash my face once a day at night. Why do I do that? To prevent skin irritation and dryness. But let’s dig a little deeper into each reason I mentioned above.

Skin type

Dry or sensitive skin types such as myself are more likely to wash our face once a day to prevent further dryness and irritation. Since washing your face is meant to remove excess oil and we need that oil (as weird as that sounds) we have to not wash it off as often. Acne prone skin types are advised to wash their face twice a day to remove that excess oil which directly causes acne.

Type of products used

If you use facial scrubs, it’s recommended to not use them every day to prevent skin irritation. I personally use them only once a week and once a day. Regular face washes that don’t contain harsh drying ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide can be used once or twice a day without harm. I use toners once a day because of how deep of a clean they give and to prevent skin irritation. For information on Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids, click the button below.

current state of skin

This relates back to skin type. Are you currently suffering from breakouts? Then you can wash your face twice a day to speed up the process of getting rid of them. Dry skin? You may want to wash your face once a day to give your skin a chance to naturally moisturize itself.

time of day

If you wash your face only once a day, should you do it in the morning or evening? I believe that this is just a personal preference and doesn’t make much difference. I prefer to wash my face in the evening because I take showers in the evening and just like having my entire body fresh at the same time (if that makes sense). I don’t like going to bed dirty and like washing off the germs and dirt that collected on my face from the public. For those who like to wash their face in the morning, it can be beneficial in the sense that you can wash off the dirt that accumulates on your pillow, drool, eye boogers, etc. It also helps to wake you up! There’s also the fact that certain products are only to be used at night and should be washed off prior to being exposed to sunlight the next day to prevent sunburn. The big takeaway from this is that there’s no right or wrong answer. It’s completely based on your own skincare needs. As long as you just wash your face it shouldn’t matter what other people say. A big tip is if you wear makeup, you should wash your face twice a day! Wash your face before you apply makeup for better application and absolutely wash off your makeup before going to bed to prevent breakouts.

Now here comes the big question. How often do you wash your face? Are you team once or twice a day? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
