5 Tips For Better Sleep

As long as I can remember, I’ve always been a morning person. Now I don’t mean I enjoy waking up extremely early (around 5am), but I never needed to use an alarm to wake up. To this day, I feel sleepy for about the first five to ten minutes, but then I’m good to go. When I hear people say that they’re night owls, I cringe (for the fact that I get tired pretty early, say around 8 or 9pm). For the people who love the night life and can’t imagine what it’s like being a morning person: going to bed early, waking up early, and overall just getting good sleep at appropriate times; This is the post for you.
1) Set a bedtime schedule
You might be thinking, “Isn’t a bedtime for kids?” No, it’s not only for kids, it helps train your body to get tired around the same time. This becomes extremely useful for those who have to wake up early for work like me. Now for me personally, I try to aim to be asleep before 10pm. I set up reminders a while ago on my Fitbit app so when 10pm rolls around, I get sent an notification on my phone that vibrates and makes a subtle noise.
2) White Noise
For those who don’t know, white noise is basically a noise frequency that blocks out any potential background noise that might prevent you from falling asleep. They sell white noise machines with different sounds, for example, ocean waves, rain, rainforest noise, etc. I actually have a white noise sound machine that I used to use every night, but I stopped using it (not sure why, but it was HoMedics brand). I now go on Youtube and have a playlist specifically made for bedtime white noise. I’ll put the links to a few of my favorite videos below and you can browse white noise machines at the end of this post. Just type in “White Noise” and experiment with the different sounds on Youtube. I also use a fan (yes, even in the dead of winter) and an air conditioner works perfectly as well.
3) Cool down your bedroom
If you’re like me, you MUST sleep in a cold room. All year round I sleep with a fan on me at full blast, to help me with white noise and to keep me cold. When summer rolls around, I know I can count on amazing sleep because of the noise and with how cold my room gets (believe me , I love a freezing cold room). If you don’t sleep with a fan already, do it!
4) Don’t eat right before bed
Eating right before bed actually can keep you awake. Your body is focusing its efforts on digesting food instead of “turning off” for the night. Plus I usually get acid reflux (burning in my chest) when I lay down right after eating. Try eating an entire McDonald’s meal before bed if you don’t believe me. (I dare you) If you must eat, make sure to lay elevated and not flat to prevent this from happening.
5) Turn off the TV and other electronic devices
I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty good at turning off the tv at bedtime. But leaving my phone alone is another story. I’m known to lay in bed with the tv off, but under the covers on my phone. I’m slowly working on this and I’d like to think I’m getting better. Apple iPhones have a setting under display where your screen can change tone (makes it more yellow so it won’t keep you awake). I set mine to change automatically with sunrise and sunset.
A bonus tip for those take naps, don’t take naps close to your actual bedtime. It WILL keep you awake that night. Do you have any tips for a good night’s sleep. Feel free to comment below!
